#Hashtag Activism
This course delves into the growth and influence of digital activism, specifically how social media platforms empower grassroots movements advocating for gender, sexuality, and racial equality. Students will analyze how online platforms disrupt oppressive systems, amplify marginalized voices, and encourage community engagement. By studying cases like #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, and #SayHerName, the course explores how race, gender, and sexuality intersect in online advocacy. It also evaluates the effectiveness and limitations of hashtag activism in driving social change. Students will explore concepts of digital Black feminism, intersectionality, and media literacy while honing their critical thinking and ethical engagement skills.

Misogynoir in Digital Spaces
"Misogynoir in Digital Spaces" delves into the critical examination of the unique challenges faced by Black women in the digital realm due to the intersection of misogyny and anti-Black racism, known as misogynoir. Students will explore the historical context, manifestations, and impacts of misogynoir in online environments. Through case studies, discussions, and contemporary examples, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Black women online and how digital platforms can both perpetuate and challenge misogynoir. This course fosters awareness, promotes critical thinking, and encourages conversations about equity and inclusion in the digital age.

Hip Hop Feminism
Hip Hop Feminism and Poetry explores Black feminism and its influence on poetry and hip-hop. We will read foundational texts that explore what Hip Hop feminism is and how it differs from other feminisms. In this class, we will read contemporary poets, analyze hip-hop lyrics and performances, and discuss how Black feminism has informed some of the work of legendary artists. This course will also challenge students to investigate how Black feminisms have informed other things in Black popular culture through readings, podcasts, TikTok’s, music videos, and film.
